MEET THE STAFF:

Katie is a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina. She began training at Ballet Spartanburg Center for Dance Education as a young child; studying Ballet, Pointe, Contemporary, Jazz, and Tap. As a high school student, Katie served as an apprentice in the company under the direction of Carlos Agudelo and Lona Gomez. As an apprentice, Katie performed various Corps de Ballet roles in The Nutcracker, Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, and Dan Synergy as well as acting and dancing in the Spartanburg Little Theatre’s production of The King and I. During this time, Katie attended Summer Intensive at The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, learning and performing classical and contemporary choreography staged by Stanislav Issaev, Irina Ushakova, Sandra Neels, and Lloyd Whitmore. Katie continued her passion for dance; taking courses in Ballet, West African dance, and Dance History at the University of South Carolina while obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education. Katie continued to pursue advanced studies in the field of education, earning a Master of Education in Teaching, Learning, and Advocacy with a concentration in Diverse Learners and an emphasis in English as a Second Language from the College of Charleston in 2021. Katie is currently a Pre-Kindergarten teacher in Charleston County School District. She is excited to combine her teaching expertise with her love of dance to inspire and instruct students at The Works Dance Company

My name is Cameron. I am Kenzie‘s husband. I edit all of the music for the studio, handle maintenance and props. You might see me do some spotting, moving heavy equipment or dropping by to say hello.

Hey! My name is Amber. I have been in love with dance, gymnastics, and cheerleading since I was young, this lead me to compete and perform throughout my childhood and high-school. While I enjoyed competing and really loved working hard to learn new routines and moves, I found that I especially enjoyed teaching my family and friends how to do them as well.

I grew up and became a wife and mom. It did not take long to remembered how much I loved teaching tumbling when my daughter started to ask me to teach her how to. For me it's watching their face light up when they finally get a trick or move after lots of hard practice. It really is a magical feeling and it is with out a doubt what has allowed me to be a successful adult. I love this art because it is and outlet and a motivator, teaching determination and that skill is simply priceless to me.

Emma Starace was born and raised in Staten Island, New York. She received her Bachelors degree in Dance at the State University of New York at Potsdam in 2016, where she went on to receive her Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction in Dance Education in 2018. In between degrees, Emma received a full scholarship to the 6 week American Dance Festival summer program at Duke University in Durham, NC, in 2017. Prior to her college years, Emma started traveling into Manhattan at 15 to enhance her Ballet skills at Peridance Capezio, while through the years, taking drop in classes at Broadway Dance Center.

Soon after finishing up her Masters degree, Emma relocated to Brooklyn, NY, working for Young Dancers In Repertory, teaching in-studio classes, as well as traveling to elementary schools in the neighboring area to help integrate dance into students curriculum. In January of 2020, she had received a full time Dance Teaching position at a Charter school in the Bronx until the pandemic took a toll on school funding.

Emma moved to Charleston, SC in November 2020 and has been settling in and finding her way in the south. She has recently departed from a full time Dance Teaching position at E.B Ellington elementary in search of teaching more technique/ studio style dancing. She still takes drop in classes at Dance Lab to continue her dance education. Emma loves to focus on mind/body connections through her passion of expression in Contemporary and modern technique, while she also thrives in ballet, tap and jazz. She is so excited to teach in a new environment and can’t wait to be a part of the Works Dance Company family!

Director

Kenzie W. C.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Kenzie and I’m the owner of The Works Dance Company. I’m a wife, mother and a lover of dance.

I started dancing when I was 3 and continued off and on until I was 12 years old. When I was 12 I started to get a little more serious about my dancing and at age 15 I was teaching. After dancing in many recitals, talent shows and events I started dancing competitively. I was on an undefeated, traveling dance team, winning grand and national championships, overalls, etc.

At 19 I aged out of there program and started working in the school systems teaching dance.

I then went on and opened up 3 different dance programs in 3 different states.

I taught professionally in Texas where I worked with retired Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and dancers from the Houston Ballet.

I then moved to South Carolina where I decided to use my business and dance education to open The Works Dance Company. I love to choreograph and teach a wide variety of styles.

To summarize it all I opened up The Works to not only pursue my passion but to encourage others to do the same. My goal is to create a fun, safe and educational environment for adults and children to express themselves. God has blessed me in so many ways and with so many people that have helped me continue with my goals. One day I hope to make a difference with my company and open up studios around the USA. Thank you to all who are supporting small businesses, volunteering, donating, etc. I look forward to meeting and seeing every student grow in something they love.
